A Simulation Study to Investigate the Sensitivity of the Electromyogram to Conduction Velocity Changes of Individual Motor Units
نویسندگان
چکیده
The sensitivity of a simulated surface electromyogram (SEMG) to changes in conduction velocity (CV) of individual motor units was assessed. Changes in the conduction velocity measurement and the median frequency and spectral compression measures of both the amplitude and power spectra of the SEMG were calculated. Results show that motor units close to the electrodes dominate the SEMG signal. Results also show that for changes in CV of individual motor units the CV measurement and the spectral measures differ. In the case of uniform changes in the CV of all motor units, changes in these measures are similar and unity sensitivity is observed. Indications from this preliminary study highlight the need for care when deducing the physiological significance of changes observed in the SEMG.

Evaluation of Changes in Nerve Conduction Velocity in the Lower Limbs of Football Players
Background & Aims: Lower limbs’ nerves are exposed to mechanical injuries in athletes (e.g. football players), because of the excessive physical demand of their job. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of regular and intense sports, such as football, on nerves in the lower leg. This study was conducted during 2006 to 2007 in the Shiraz Rehabilitation Faculty, Univer...

متن کاملChanges in muscle fiber conduction velocity indicate recruitment of distinct motor unit populations.
To obtain more insight into the changes in mean muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) during sustained isometric exercise at relatively low contraction levels, we performed an in-depth study of the human tibialis anterior muscle by using multichannel surface electromyogram. The results show an increase in MFCV after an initial decrease of MFCV at 30 or 40% maximum voluntary contraction in all...
متن کاملVariations in propagation velocity of muscle-fiber action potentials in individual motor units during voluntary contractions.
MUSCLE-FIBER CONDUCTION VELOCITY can be measured in humans in vivo during either voluntary or electrically elicited contractions. Its measure provides a window into the membrane electrophysiological properties of the muscle fibers, which cannot be directly measured, because the velocity of propagation of action potentials depends on the polarization state of the membrane. Measures of conduction...
متن کاملTracking motor unit action potentials in the tibialis anterior during fatigue.
New surface electromyogram (SEMG) techniques offer the potential to advance knowledge of healthy and diseased motor units. Conduction velocity (CV) estimates, obtained from indwelling electrodes, may provide diagnostic information, but the standard method of CV estimation from SEMG may be of only limited value. We developed a motor unit (MU) tracking algorithm to extract motor unit conduction v...
